A scenario representative of the Eastern Front during World War 2 was acted out in the skies above Duxford, during the Imperial War Museum’s Battle of Britain Airshow 2017.
Here we see the Aircraft Restoration Company’s Hispano HA-1112 M1L Buchon, G-BWUE, taking the part of a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf109 ( the Buchon is a Spanish license built Merlin engined variant of the Bf109), ‘beating up’ and ‘strafing’ the imaginary Soviet airfield accompanied by suitably loud pyrotechnics.
The ‘defending’ aircraft are a pair of 1994 Russian built Yakovlev YAK 3 fighters — YAK 3M ‘White 100’, G-CGXG (formerly D-FJAK) flown by owner, Will Greenwood, and Yak 3UA, G-OLEG (formerly D-FLAK) flown by Richard Grace.
