Модель пауэр-круизера Yamaha V-max 1200 была представлена в 1985 году, появившись впервые на рынке Северной Америки. Концепция мотоцикла представляла собой черты круизера,

выдающиеся динамические характеристики в гонках на 402 метра.За основу модели был взят двигатель от Yamaha Venture Royale — 4-цилиндровый V-образный блок жидкостного охлаждения,
объемом 1198 см, выдающий до 145 л.с. мощности и до 123 Нм крутящего момента.3,2 секунды «до сотни» для «почти чоппера» и в наши дни вызывает уважение, что уж говорить о четвертьвековой давности! «Летающая кувалда» — это 275 кг снаряженной массы,
способные разогнаться до 235 км/ч! Правда, после 160 км/ч мотоцикл действительно больше походил на снаряд, выпущенный из пушки. Направление задано, курс неизменен.
Два вопроса, всегда волновавшие умельцев, — как улучшить управляемость и как заставить мотоцикл ехать еще быстрее.Ходовая часть мотоцикла здорово отстает от возможностей двигателя,
поэтому первым делом кастомайзеры берутся за нее. Алюминиевые втулки вместо сайлент-блоков в креплении маятника и дополнительный бугель, наваренный на него, делают «зад» не таким
ватным, а передние точки крепления двигателя к раме (в оригинале там установлены резиновые втулки) «вешают» на алюминиевые пластины, включая двигатель в силовую структуру.
Передняя вилка тоже отправляется на «чердак», а вместо нее устанавливаются узлы от «литров» вроде R1 или «джиксера». Разумеется, меняют и задние амортизаторы.
Штатные 15- и 18-дюймовые колеса меняют на 17-дюймовые от тех же «литров» — они легче и управляемость выигрывает. Тормоза — отдельный разговор. На модернизированные мотики
